Escape the downtown urban grind to a calm ocean oasis at Deep Cove. Less than thirty minutes drive or an easy public bus this adorable bay-side community has a kayak centre offering rentals and lessons adjacent to the government dock. In a few hours you can explore nearby bays, inlets and waterfalls beneath towering mountains.

Most of the rental options are in two hour blocks for less than fifty dollars, booking in advance is recommended as it will save time signing the waiver online. You can leave your wallet and keys at the Deep Cove Kayak desk, but it is best to come 'ready to go' as there are limited local storage options. This popular location can be very busy so arrive thirty minutes early on the weekends. If you have a dry bag for your phone it works really well in case you wish to stop to take photos. The rental boards and kayaks also have strapping to affix waterbottles and watershoes with a carabiner. You can pick one up from MEC or Home Depot for under five dollars in advance. If you attach your sunglasses with string they will remain snug on your head in the event you fall off due to a passing wave from a boat.

Life jackets are provided and the water is generally very calm and safe for beginners. Low tide is the best time to see the beautiful local purple starfish. Other wildlife includes seals and eagles who soar overhead some of the city's best real estate in this area. Plenty of hiking and dining options nearby.
