Hike Fernie

Fernie is a small town in the interior of B.C in the East Kootenay region. It is best known for some insanely good winter resorts. If you find yourself in the interior or want an alternate route back from Banff to Vancouver it is worthwhile taking a southern detour via the Elk Valley along BC3.

Fernie has comparatively low-trafficked hiking with gorgeous views and accessible trailheads all within twenty minutes drive from town. This is generally a more affordable holiday option when compared to other Western Canadian mountain towns. People are more relaxed and the pace is decidedly slower.

The town itself is small but has some nice outdoor patio options such as the Bridge Bistro for dining and beer lovers should check out the Fernie Brewing Company on the eastern edge of the settlement.

There are a range of hiking opportunities and be sure to carry bear spray as grizzlies are known to inhabit the interior. The tourism centre has ten hiking recommendations and plenty of information here. If you want a rewarding half day option then Mount Fernie is an excellent choice. For those who are looking for a challenging option then the Three Sisters is mind blowing.
